Since getting back from SF, I seem to have become addicted to sketching in the moleskine. I’ve done a couple of new paintings, but I’m really enjoying letting the ideas flow and not worrying about the detail.
I’ve got a bunch of ideas waiting to start on once I’ve got the studio sorted. At the moment it seems like my paints are never in the same place I am, so having the sketchbook to hand has been a bit of a lifesaver.
I also took the opportunity to mess around a little with some digital work, I’ve not touched photoshop (to paint with) since last year – I had to try and remember what to do, but pretty happy with the results.
and some sketches:
Here’s a taster of something I’ve been up to of late. Aiming for a really stripped back vibe, i’ve been working on a selection of black and white ink drawings, which have then been digitally rendered.
I’ve got something in mind to give them a pretty special hand rendered twist as prints, but I need to do a little bit of experimenting first …
Something I’ve been messing around with this past week. I wanted to mess around with background textures and context for this image, I found some old penny newspapers which I thought worked really well. In this case digitally, but it’s something i intend to explore more in a “physical” way.
It’s been a really funny week, I ‘d set aside some time for something that’s been delayed. No problems, that leaves me with a whole week to fill with painting/drawing/riding bikes, plus, it seems to be the start of spring (finally). All good.
So I set about some wood panels that I’d got waiting to be dealt with. The first result I already posted, the second was….well….fucking abysmal. I dunno, it just totally did my head in, I just cant seem to get the paint to do anything I want on a hard surface. It got painted over and over and ended up a horrid greyed out stodgy mess.
Fuck you wood panels.
At least for now. I’m going back to some lovely paper, and maybe a little digital malarkey.
I did this to console myself:
And I thought I’d post this, which i did a month or so ago, it kinda kick started the current baby/angel/skull head thing I’ve been doing.
On the plus side, the Blik thing seems to be going down really well, generating some interest, and there’s still a few more days in which I can do justice to the idea I butchered on the wood panel!
I’ve been working with the folks at Blik on a range of wall vinyls. They’ve been great to work with and have done a killer job of translating my work on to large scale vinyls.
I’ve got some samples here and they look the biz. You can get them here, hope to be doing some more in the future!
Couple of new pieces, prints available at my shop
Also, the painting i did a couple of weeks back, got revisited, the birds were bugging the hell out of me. Let’s hear it for Alizarin Crimson.
Unfortunately, a crappy digital shot as usual, but you get the idea.
There’s not enough time! It sucks.
I get an idea or 2 kicking around my head, then spend weeks trying to actually get something down. It’s so easy to get distracted by other (easier to do) things. But this Sunday I made myself sit down and work up a sketch that’s been around for a few weeks.
It kind of turned out a bit creepier than I intended. Well, tbh, I didnt intend anything, but that’s the way it turned out. And I’ve been in something of a pissy mood for a while now, which i think has come through in the drawing. Hey ho.
So now, having made myself spend a day on painting, I’m feeling guilty that I didn’t go out in the sun for a ride. Lose/lose eh?
