Well, helloo there, poor neglected blog.
Apologies for the lack of updates recently, the blame lies totally with an addictive iPhone app called instagram. I’ve never been one for words so having something that’s picture based is a godsend! If you haven’t got an iPhone then you can follow my feed (assuming you have any interest in it!) here
As for recent activity, I’ve just finished and shipped the new work for the show at CAVE Gallery in LA next month. Massively stoked about this one, I’m really happy with the work which is unusual – I think it marks a real step forward so hopefully folks will like it. I’ll update the blog with some teaser images a little closer to the show.
And when I’ve not been painting, i’ve been filling a couple of Moleskines with doodles, drawings and ideas for another day. Again, terribly addictive. I’ve really enjoyed just letting the pencil find it’s own way rather than fretting over colour and composition. I think in the context of a sketchbook pretty much anything goes, so it make s a refreshing change and is very motivational too.
Having just finished my second Moleskine, I’ve taken the opportunity to make 4 of the most recent drawings available through my Big Cartel Store Pics below, but hopefully a great way to get hold of some original artwork at a reasonable price!
I’ve just started on a new project which could see some work on some ceramics. It’s early days and I’m not sure how it’s all going to pan out, but I’ve been working on an idea and these are a couple of sketches I’ve done for it.
Working on a composition, and there will be a lot more narrative added, but I’m pretty pleased with how it’s heading.
I think I’ve gone a bit colour blind. Seriously, i stare at something I like and I cant figure out what the colour is, let alone put together a pallette for a decent painting.
So I thought I’d take a break and hit the black ink. Here’s a detail from one of the pieces I’ve been working on. It hasn’t got a name, yet, but I like it.
And I’m going to do some more of this inky collage stuff!
It’s been a quite couple of weeks, I did some work on a new painting thats kinda under wraps for now, but I’ve been trying to figure out a way forward. Got all sorts of ideas for new things to try, not quite sure how to get started but I guess I’ll just jump straight in and figure it out later!
So I’ve been sketching away and I think I might make something of this. Not sure what, we shall see!
The troublesome wood panel is getting a second chance.
I’m using a different image and taking a different approach this time, here’s how it’s looking right now. Just lots of work with a graphite stick. Next stage I’ll varnish it, then start to work over with some colour and highlights. Still carrying the remains of the last attempt. Kinda adds to it.
I’ve really got no idea what I’m doing, time will tell!
There’s not enough time! It sucks.
I get an idea or 2 kicking around my head, then spend weeks trying to actually get something down. It’s so easy to get distracted by other (easier to do) things. But this Sunday I made myself sit down and work up a sketch that’s been around for a few weeks.
It kind of turned out a bit creepier than I intended. Well, tbh, I didnt intend anything, but that’s the way it turned out. And I’ve been in something of a pissy mood for a while now, which i think has come through in the drawing. Hey ho.
So now, having made myself spend a day on painting, I’m feeling guilty that I didn’t go out in the sun for a ride. Lose/lose eh?
Back on the Wacom. Started out doodling this in the sketchbook over the weekend, came to life today.
A few days of sun and a couple of rides on the mountain bike, and I feel all inspired again!
I think maybe there’s a couple of tweaks still needed, her face maybe just needs a bit more shape and the ribbon maybe more highlights, but I dunno, maybe I’ll leave it as it is.
